Buckets O’ Beer

The Front Page Restaurant & Grille
1333 New Hampshire Ave.
(202) 296-6500

Known for one of the best Thursday night specials in town, The Front Page in Dupont Circle is definitely a sure bet if you are feeling thirsty for some beers. In fact, they serve them by the buckets here. Just a measly $12 will get you a bucket of 6 Miller Lites or Coronas on ice and plenty of new friends.

I’ve heard the buzz about this place for a few years now, but have only began frequenting it recently as it is notoriously known as one of the toughest places on fakes. That being said, I must say I appreciate the door men’s vigilance in keeping out the youngsters because it does maintain the “not your typical college bar” feel they are shooting for. In fact, The Front Page isn’t a college bar at all. Most of the people I mingled with on Thursday night were in their mid-20s and seemed pretty professional. But the crowd here is very hit or miss. One night I could have sworn I was in a taping of the show “The Pick-Up Artist” because I have never seen so many overtly dorky guys in a DC bar before. But for the most part, you can expect to find a few decent looking people who may even be upgraded to hot by the end of the night (depending on how many buckets you down). Try and go with a group that you enjoy hanging out with to ensure a good time even if the crowd is lame.

The attire at this bar is pretty casual and you can get away with wearing a T-shirt and jeans if you like. Most guys I saw wore button down shirts with jeans and most girls wore jeans and a nice top. The bar itself is nothing spectacular, but it is spacious and there is a pretty sweet dance floor if you feel the need to bust out some moves. There are actually 2 bar areas, but the crowds seem pretty different at the two. If you walk in through the front door, the bar is lit, fairly quiet, and most people look to be in their early 30s. The back bar (which you have to enter through an office building strangely enough) is where the action is at. It’s dark, people are younger and more boisterous, and there’s music blasting. The music is your basic top 40, which means you will definitely hear “your song” by the end of the night. The bartenders are much older than you would ever expect (one guy had gray hair) and they are not very friendly, but they do their job right and you won’t have a problem getting a drink. Some nights they even have a beer cart set up right by the door so you can actually have a drink in your hand before you even take off your coat.

Suffice to say you will not be disappointed with The Front Page if cheap beer and decent company makes you happy.

We usually consider the "front bar" the bar through the office entrance because it is next to the metro and buffalo billiards. It is also much larger and bigger for crowds, which would usually be a "front bar" characteristic.
