It’s Bumpin’ at the Pumphouse

Rhino Bar & Pumphouse
3295 M St.
(202) 333-3150

There are two sides to Rhino Bar & Pumphouse in Georgetown. One side is your run of the mill sports bar playing top 40 hits, dispensing Jaeger bombs, and promoting sweaty co-ed grinding on the ground floor with a few pool tables, big screen TV’s, and high top tables upstairs. But come game days the mood shifts towards extreme intensity as crowds gather to feverishly cheer on their favorite teams (specifically Penn State, Ohio State, Syracuse, Georgetown, the Philadelphia Eagles, and the Boston Red Sox). Pints, pitchers, and traditional bar fare get passed around like joints at a Phish concert as fans curse and cheer at the screens. “Even those who don’t give a shit about the game become avid fans screaming cheers, learning the first string line up, and adoring Papa Joe,” says Josie Cuervo.

Rhino Bar is much bigger than it appears from its unassuming exterior. Inside the spacious split-level interior, the décor is typical for a sports bar. Dark wood paneling, random posters, grimy bar stools, and a dance floor that can get pretty slippery towards the end of the night all add up to a casual laid-back atmosphere conducive to heavy drinking and rowdy behavior. The male to female ratio is generally tipped towards males, making it a good place for ladies to snag some numbers. Attire is casual on game days with a wide array of sports apparel being flaunted. Saturday nights are a tad bit dressier however, as college co-eds dominate the bar.

Beer is the predominate beverage of choice on game day with a diverse selection on top. The bar seems to be sponsored by Jaegermeister so most of their drink specials revolve around the black licorice alcohol. As far as lines go, we’ve never encountered one and as for a cover, there is a modest $5 charge on Saturday nights, which seems well worth it once you’re inside. Beer tub girls directly inside the door make it incredibly convenient to grab a beer without dealing with the crowded bar. With that being said, a trip to the bar is definitely a pleasant experience as the bartenders are friendly and helpful.

All we can say is whether it’s a game day or not, come thirsty and ready to have a good time.
