Glorious

Old Glory American Bar-B-Que
3139 M Street NW
(202)-337-3406

A night out in Georgetown is not complete without a stop at Old Glory. Widely regarded as one of the most well-known and reliable bars on the M Street strip, Old Glory certainly has a lot to offer.

Known for having a pretty killer rooftop deck bar, Old Glory is definitely the spot to be in Georgetown when the weather gets warm. Downstairs, the interior is standard to the area; dark wood paneling, mirrors, low booths and dim lighting. There is ample seating downstairs and its a great place to grab a bite, chat with friends and enjoy a few good brews before the volume gets turned up and the party crowd rolls in. Old Glory typically heats up around 12 am on any Friday or Saturday night. The line is never too long, and you won’t wait for more than 5-10 minutes. Saturday there is a $3 cover and while this might seem like a deterrent, many neighboring bars have a comparable charge. Once Old Glory gets busy you probably won’t manage snagging a table so get comfortable holding that jacket or leaving it at a table in the front.

Upstairs there are more tables and typically a calmer, quieter crowd that stays talking while the folks downstairs are grooving to the music. The outside deck is accessed through this second floor, past the bathrooms, which are clean and typically readily available. The deck is small but cozy and the bar lines one entire side. Usually, the mood out here is rowdy and fun. While there are a few tables outside they are usually occupied so be prepared to stand.

The crowd is usually a solid and attractive mix of collegians hailing equally from Georgetown and GW, yo pros (young professionals) and occasionally a group of older men. Attire is fairly casual and for girls, dark jeans, flats and a simple tank is as fancy as you need to get. Guys are equally as casual, although there are definitely blazer/suit pant wearing types, which is to be expected in preppy Georgetown. The clientele however, is friendly, down to earth and easy to talk to. I’ve never spent a night at Old Glory just mingling with my group.

The bartenders are always friendly and even in the madness of a ruckus crowd they are pleasantly helpful. Drinks are fairly priced at $6 a pop and the wide array of beer/liquor ensure a night of creative libations. The music is Top 40 and you’ll end up spending the night moving your body.

Rumor has it that super-exclusive club; Josephine (not to be confused with the new hot spot on Vermont Ave) is located in the basement of Old Glory. Here at DCBW we’re not big into “lists” or bars/clubs that use them so we’ll never be able to affirm this claim. However, if you’re into the whole privileged, underground DC social scene you may be intrigued to hear old reliable Glory actually houses a space for the district’s elite.

Old Glory provides an unpretentious atmosphere to dance, mingle and enjoy a few drinks (and/or shots). Our trips to Georgetown almost always include a stop at this bar. The crowd is always fun, friendly and there to have a good time. Put it on your list if you haven’t been there yet, especially as the weather heats up. If you’re a regular, maybe we’ll see you there...
