Wine and Dine Me Please

Proof
775 G Street NW
(202) 737-7663

A one word description of Proof Restaurant and Wine Bar would have to be swanky. Or maybe sultry. Actually, sexy. To be honest, you can’t sum up this place in one word because it encompasses all three and so much more.

A recent addition to the Penn Quarter neighborhood in DC, Proof truly is a unique restaurant and bar that is a beacon of hope for wine aficionados who have been itching for a cool local hangout. The moment you walk in, you know that your experience here will be unlike any you’ve had in a while. The modern rustic interior is warm and inviting, as rich dark woods blend seamlessly with stainless steel wine cellars. The bar is breathtaking and lined with every liquor you can think of and of course, the wine. The wine is treated like art here, proudly showcased in what appears to be a dispensing system of the future. They have 16 reds and 16 whites ready to be ordered by the glass and over 1000 wines available by the bottle.

Warning: do not come to Proof if you are not willing to drop some dough. This place is not for bargain hunters. A 4 ounce taster glass of wine can cost you $7, a full glass can run you well into the upper teens. For the adventurous millionaire, try ordering the 1947 Chateau Cheval Blanc for a mere $11,000…

The crowd here is fairly one note, as Proof is usually occupied by professionals with a discerning palate. Anything suitable for the office or a cocktail party is probably how you should dress, which makes this place perfect for a date to impress that special somebody. The food is out of this world, but again, not cheap in the least bit. Try the sea scallops and ask the knowledgeable wait staff for a wine pairing suggestion.

But no review of Proof would be complete without a mention of the unusual bathrooms, particularly the men’s. Gentlemen, drink enough wine to have to make a pit stop in here (you will not be sorry). And ladies, have your guy hold the door open as you take a peak inside so as to understand why he took so long on his bathroom trip.

If wine is proof that God loves us, then Proof is the altar at which we should worship the stuff.
